Downsizing & Preparing to Leave

Downsizing for a move abroad is both liberating and emotional. The physical process of sorting through decades of possessions is intertwined with the psychological process of letting go — and both deserve thoughtful attention.

The Four-Box Method

Start with this simple system: place four boxes or areas in each room labeled Keep, Sell, Donate, and Trash. Be ruthlessly honest as you sort:

  • Keep — items you’ll ship, store, or carry with you (be very selective)

  • Sell — valuable items worth the effort to list on eBay, Facebook Marketplace, or consignment

  • Donate — good condition items that won’t sell for much but can help others

  • Trash — broken, worn out, or truly unusable items

Start with the easiest rooms (garage, guest room, storage areas) and work toward the hardest (your bedroom, office, and sentimental items). Build momentum with easy wins before tackling the emotional decisions.

Timeline for Downsizing

Give yourself at least 3–6 months for the full downsizing process. Rushing leads to regret — either keeping too much or letting go of things you wish you’d saved. Here’s a suggested timeline:

  • Months 1–2: Sort and categorize everything; begin selling valuable items

  • Month 3: Large furniture sales, donation runs, and storage decisions

  • Month 4: Pack shipping boxes, digitize photos and documents

  • Months 5–6: Final cleanup, cancel services, and prepare for departure

What to Do With Your Home

You have three main options, each with distinct implications:

  • Sell — provides capital for your move and eliminates ongoing costs, but removes a safety net

  • Rent out — generates income and preserves the asset, but requires property management

  • Keep empty — maximum flexibility for return visits, but ongoing costs with no income

💡 Pro Tip

Digitize everything you can: photos, documents, recipes, and sentimental letters. A single external hard drive or cloud storage account can hold thousands of precious memories without taking up any physical space. This makes it much easier to let go of the physical originals.

The Pre-Move Checklist

  • Set up mail forwarding or a virtual mailbox service

  • Update your address with banks, insurance, and government agencies

  • Grant power of attorney to a trusted person for handling affairs back home

  • Cancel or pause subscriptions, memberships, and services

  • Ensure your estate plan and will are up to date

Your Next Step

Start with one room this week. Set a timer for two hours and sort everything using the four-box method. The hardest part is starting — once you begin, momentum takes over.
